The Aims and History

The club was formed approx in 1993 by three people namely Don Berry, George Harrison and Derek Haviour with the aim of starting a club that catered for the type of modeller who did not wish to fly fast noisy models with under propped two stroke engines which seem to cause so much upset to the average person. They obtained a flying site adjacent  to Doles Lane, Clifton, an ex pit hill which had been semi levelled when the M62  motorway was constructed.

An inaugural meeting was called at the Grove Inn, Brookfoot when enough potential members turned up to enable us to affiliate to the BMFA and the club came into being under its present name. Early in the life of the club  Don Berry won a flight in a helicopter belonging to Mr Richard Howard who was requested to land at our flying site, this he did and promptly had a go with Derek's model, while flying we mentioned the fact that airfield sites were becoming harder to obtain and it transpired that Mr Howard owned Tockwith Airfield ,( ex RAF Marston Moor ) . This is an airfield  that local modellers use to to fly on in the 1960s. We were offered the use of the airfield and have held meetings there on the first Sunday in the month for the past 7 years, the last three with permission from Mr Simon Moore who now leases it for his cart track and driving school operations.

Later due to the local golf course purchasing the land at Does Lane we were evicted from the pit hills and had to look for another field, luckily our chairman Phillip Kent knew a local farmer and was able to secure our present field, though at a considerably higher rent, slightly sloping and with generous amounts of sheep manure. It is much larger but still the advantage of being mainly close to our membership. We also changed our meetings to the Black Horse Hotel at Clifton, where we meet on the third Thursday in the month.

Most of the flying at Clifton takes place in the afternoons as we have a considerable number retired persons who are able to fly on any day the weather permits. Tuesday is a work party afternoon, grass cutting and dung clearance being the main tasks, although many more improvements could be made to the facilities if more members came along to help.

The future? who knows where future years will take us, purchasing a flying site is every clubs dream, it's just a matter of funds. The untimely death of our member Alan Wilson who had bequeathed his gear and models to the club raised some £1700, securing this clubs short term future, that generosity can only serve as a  inspiration  to others. We have restarted our organised events at Tockwith and I am sure Phillip Kent would like to build on his success with the Traplet sponsored Open Scale Events.

Our recently retired Secretary of 72 years young, has given the club many years of his time freely and without hesitation  building on an excellent foundation laid by our founder members making the club a major name in the hobby.
